    News — Spoleto Festival 2018

Meet our Spoleto Artist in Residence, MorowaMosai

Meet our Spoleto Artist in Residence, MorowaMosai

We are so excited to present a very special Artist Pop-Up during this year's Spoleto Festival in Charleston.

From May 25th to June 10th, we're offering one emerging artist pro-bono gallery space in our Queen Street studio, situated in the heart of the historic Arts District and just steps from galleries, the Gibbes Museum of Art, and Dock Street Theatre.

    So who did we select?

An incredibly talented Charleston painter and visual artist, Alexandria Searles, who creates under the moniker MorowaMosai. Her work will be on display in our space for the duration of Spoleto Festival, so you can pop in and browse her newest pieces on your way to theater shows in our neighborhood!

We also hope you'll join us to kick off the festival with an afternoon Artist Meet & Greet on May 25th! Enjoy light refreshments and meet both Alexandria and our founder, Andrea Jahde, before you head out to the evening's events!

    About Alexandria:

Alexandria Searles, also known as MorowaMosai, is a graphic design major who specializes in creating original works of art. Her style can be described as Afrocentric and Empowered Femininity.

Says Alex, "I feel fortunate that I am able to use this gift to inspire, advocate, and promote diversity across racial and cultural divides. It is my goal to inspire others to pursue their dreams with urgency, advocate for people of color and women, while forging a bridge through our shared commonalties- we are more alike than we are different."

In addition to offering live event paintings, paint classes, and commissioned works, Alexandria has also hosted a Black History Experience in Charleston for the past four years. A painting promoting “Unity” hangs in Mayor Tecklenberg’s office, and her moving mural created with Lowcountry Local Works (Chicora Neighborhood) was featured on “Bounce Around Charleston” and the Her Story podcast.

Alex currently teaches art techniques to middle school children through Metanoia, and collaborates with violinist Daniel D. via Facebook Live -- he plays while she paints. She continues to evolve as an artist and hone her craft by experimenting with new mediums and techniques.

Spoleto Festival Artist Pop-Up at Jahde Leather Atelier

Beginning on May 25th, Jahde Leather Atelier will also host a Spoleto Festival artist pop-up, a unique opportunity for one emerging artist to showcase their work at no cost during this year’s festival. The selected artist will gain exclusive, pro-bono access to display and sell their work in the Jahde studio space, nestled in the heart of Charleston’s historic Arts district just steps from the Gibbes Museum of Art and several high-profile galleries.
